Half of Scottish public sector audits filed late

Audit Scotland has called for improvements in the quality of financial reporting by public sector bodies in Scotland as half of audits miss filing deadline

The regulator admitted that there was still a backlog of unfinished audits with performance declining sharply since the pandemic with over half of audits missing the filing deadline. The latest figures for 2022/23 showed that 51% of audits were late, compared with only 18% in 2020/21.

There are also continuing problems with the quality of financial reporting, which need to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
