The chief financial officer at car parts and bike specialist Halfords has been fined £12,000 for drink-driving in a golf buggy while travelling at 6mph while on holiday in Norway at a remote golfing and spa resort

Jonny Mason, who joined the retailer’s management team in October 2015, was given an earnings-related penalty after being stopped by police as he drove the battery-powered cart from a bar to his accommodation in Norway's Kragero resort.

Norway has the strictest drink-driving laws in Europe only allowing 0.1milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood, and it is illegal to drink drive on private property.

Mason, who was not in court when the case was heard in Norway, has also been given a suspended two week jail sentence and is banned for two years from driving in Norway.

A spokesman for Halfords said: 'Halfords can confirm that its finance director, Jonny Mason, has been convicted of a drink driving offence in Norway.

'The incident took place while driving a golf cart at less than 10kmph on a cart path at a private golf resort.

'Jonny was unaware that this was an offence under Norwegian law and did not contest the charge against him.'

Prior to joining Halfords, Mason held senior finance positions at Odeon Cinema Group and Sainsburys.
