Harding: time to overhaul accounting for intangible assets

The accountancy profession must look beyond the tangible to think of new ways to articulate the value of intangible assets, says Andrew Harding, chief executive of management accounting at Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA)

Advances in technology and the opportunities they bring, along with increasing demand from consumers for faster and easier online experiences, have driven widespread change in how businesses create value.

Over the years, this digital transformation has placed greater emphasis on intangible assets, such as intellectual property, software and reputation. It is intangible assets that now make up a majority of a corporation’s net worth. When looking at Facebook, for example, data is a key driver of value for the business, but it is difficult to put a number on exactly how much that data is worth.
