The taxman has launched a new internet site for the public to report suspected tax evaders. In its latest bid to crack down on tax evasion, HM Revenue & Customs is engaging the use of the internet as part of its campaign launched in 2005, which has so far recovered £42m. Under its new penalties system, HMRC has the power to charge penalties of up to 100% for anyone who deliberately evades tax. Stephen Timms, financial secretary to the Treasury, said the online system was 'quick and easy'. 'Being able to report potential tax evasion online is just the latest step in demonstrating that for tax cheats the game is up,' he said.
