HMRC has admitted it is having problems with reconciling the PAYE charges due for some schemes using its Real Time Information (RTI) system which came into operation on 6 April 2013.

As a result, the tax authority has set up a dedicated team to look at why some PAYE schemes have experienced ongoing problems in reconciling the difference between the tax HMRC says is due, and the tax they think they owe.

HMRC says the specialist team will be liaising with a number of PAYE schemes to work through their examples to find out what is causing these discrepancies, and resolve them.

The department will be updating its guidance every time a root cause is identified, and will also be taking steps to prevent the difficulties from arising in the first place.

The department has already updated the 'View your current PAYE payment and submission position' section of its guidance for employers using HMRC's PAYE Online, to make it clearer when information will be updated, and what information will be available at any given time.
