HM Revenue & Customs has developed a new resource that enables secondary schools to teach its pupils about tax issues with a scheme called 'Tax Matters'. Stephen Timms, financial secretary to the Treasury said that 'it is more important than ever for young people to learn about how their taxes contribute to society's needs and the essential services that would not be possible without everyone's tax contributions'. Young people will be able to learn about tax in three different modules including income tax, national insurance, and tax and society. The resource is also an interactive service which contains videos, quizzes and games and is aimed to enhance young people's knowledge by giving them key facts figures relating to tax. HMRC will initially aim the scheme to those who teach personal, social, health and economic education and citizenship in secondary schools, in addition to charities and organisations that help young people who are not in education or employment. Timms added: 'Nearly one million pupils leave education and enter the tax system each year. By gaining a better understanding of tax and national insurance, they will be much better prepared for their life ahead'.
