HMRC switches to online acknowledgements for corporation tax returns

As part of the preparation for full digitisation of HMRC services, the tax authority is reviewing the paper communications it currently has with tax agents about corporation tax returns

From mid September, HMRC will stop issuing company tax return letter (CT620 ACK) and is changing the Government Gateway email that confirms filing, to prompt customers to check CT Online View Liabilities and Payments (L&P) where they can see their return details.

Agents will also be able to view this information by entering their agent authorisation details.

Currently, this paper acknowledgement letter is sent to companies and authorised agents when a company tax return has been filed successfully through HMRC’s CT Online Service.

The new system will come into effect from 19 September.

In the announcement, HMRC stated: ‘We plan to implement the changes from 19 September 2016. If you’re an agent it won’t affect your ability to carry out corporation tax work on behalf of your clients. It’s intended to make things easier and quicker.’

Companies without tax agents will continue to receive the written acknowledgements for the time being.

Any tax agent setting up an online account for corporation tax will have to first register as an agent in writing with HMRC. It takes up to 28 days for HMRC to approve a registration request.
