Businesses have little chance
of long-term survival if they ignore the cost of their impact on the
environment, reports Penny Sukhraj
Hot on the heels of the latest legislation mandating all UK-quoted
companies to report their greenhouse gas emissions from 1 October,
comes a conference which focuses on how accountants need to consider
how to calculate the cost of the impact business has on the environment.
The inaugural World Forum on Natural Capital this month –
which brings together the International Integrated Reporting Council
(IIRC), DEFRA, ICAEW, The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity
(TEEB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) –
will focus on issues concerning accounting for the world's natural
resources, as broadly determined by the Rio conference held in June
last year.
