Letters of engagement: tips and advice

When signing up a new client, it is mandatory for accountancy practices to produce letters of engagement setting out the terms of the business agreement and contracted services. CCH Daily provides tips and advice on writing effective engagement letters to avoid unnecessary client disputes

The letter of engagement is a formal letter setting out the basis of the contract between the accounting firm and the client.

A formal letter is mandatory in respect of audit work and investment business advice. In addition, certain clauses are mandatory for inclusion in engagement letters, for example, clients' right to complain to the ICAEW and of the name of the principal in the firm whom they may initially contact if they wish to complain.
