In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling that government does not have the power to trigger Article 50 without parliamentary approval first, prime minister Theresa May has confirmed there will be a white paper on Brexit setting out the government’s plans relating to the UK’s exit from the EU
May made the pledge in response during the regular prime minister questions session in parliament this morning. She said she recognised there was ‘an appetite’ for a white paper setting out her ‘bold plan’.
Following the Supreme Court decision, the government has indicated that a parliamentary bill could be introduced as early as tomorrow, and scheduled for debate next week.
During prime minister’s questions, May told MPs they would be given ‘every opportunity’ to ‘provide scrutiny’ over the Brexit proposals.
