‘Not my job to tell an accountant they need to do something’, says HMRC MTD chief

Head of Making Tax Digital says HMRC has not yet decided how it will bring £30,000 cohort into quarterly reporting as officials weigh future role of automatic enrolment, stressing accountants still have major role to play

HMRC has yet to decide whether it will use autoenrollment when signing up taxpayers earning more than £30,000 under Making Tax Digital (MTD) from April 2026, with MTD director Craig Ogilvie saying the tax authority remains ‘open-minded’ on its approach as it prepares for the next phase of the rollout.

Speaking exclusively to Business & Accountancy Daily at HMRC's stakeholder conference, Ogilvie said the tax authority would review evidence from the first year of mandation before deciding how best to drive participation among the next group.
