Nunn: one size tax is not the answer for self employed

Attempts to reform tax reporting for the self employed and landlords need to be carefully thought through to avoid creating more complexity and red tape. Yvette Nunn CTA ATT MAAT, director of Berkeley Associates, assesses the latest OTS report

One size fits all! How many times have you seen that on a clothing or accessories label? The instances where one item really would fit people of different shapes and sizes are few and far between. The first item that comes to mind is a cap, but even then, the cap would likely be adjustable.

Thankfully, the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) recognised this in its latest report, Tax reporting and payment: Simplifying tax for self-employed people and residential landlords. It accepted that one system would not suit all when it comes to tax payments to be made by the self employed and landlords.
