Parliamentary committees are back up and running next week with HMRC officials, including chief Lin Homer, due before the Public Accounts Committee and the Chancellor starting the week with a grilling by the House of Lords economic affairs committee
The Chancellor is scheduled to make his annual appearance in front of the House of Lords economic affairs committee next week, to face a range of questions on topical issues such as the economic case for the UK staying in the EU, executive pay rates, and whether given recent scandals and corporate governance failures there is concrete evidence of any change in banking culture.
At the session, timetabled for 3.35pm on Tuesday 8 September, George Osborne will also be grilled about whether the Hinkley Point power station is a good deal for UK taxpayers and whether the extension of Right to Buy to housing associations, announced earlier this year, will deplete social housing stock.
Other possible topics on the agenda include an assessment of the impact of the Summer Budget on income inequality in the UK; the effect of the National Living Wage on productivity and employment; greater borrowing powers for Scotland; the economic impact of the HS2 railway improvements; and the case for replacing the UK benefits system with a basic income.
The session will be available to view on Parliament TV and details are here
Meanwhile, senior HMRC executives will find themselves back in front of the Public Accounts Committee the following day, on 9 September.
HMRC chief executive Lin Homer, along with CFO Justin Holliday and Jennie Grainger, director general enforcement and compliance, will be answering questions about the department’s strategic tax overview from the committee, which has a new chair Meg Hillier MP, replacing Margaret Hodge MP.
