Paying salaries prioritised over ‘terrifying’ tax debt

Tax debts were not seen as a priority when balanced against maintaining cash flow and paying staff during the pandemic, according to research into HMRC debt collection

While participants were generally aware of the amounts owed to HMRC, there were barriers to settling their debt such as home working and communication with accountants during the pandemic. The use of post to inform businesses of debt was a problem, as offices were often shut and this often meant long delays. Businesses called for HMRC to use email to contact them about outstanding debt rather than relying on posted letters.
