This week's news of professional moves in the sector includes a partner promotion and a senior management hire at Haysmacintyre, Moore Stephens gains a transfer pricing partner from RSM, Smith Cooper appoints a senior executive and senior manager in its corporate finance team
Haysmacintyre has promoted Mark Pattenden to partner in its private client department. Pattenden leads the firm’s inheritance tax advisory and compliance team and has worked at the firm for over 16 years. He is an expert adviser on the tax advantages of angel investing and the benefits of both the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). The firm has also hired Alex Gillespie as a senior manager in its not for profit team. Gillespie joins from Gran Thornton and has extensive experience in working with fundraising charities, membership bodies, endowed foundations, universities and schools and his particular areas of interest include the practical application of financial reporting for charities. In his previous roles, he has presented for CFG and CIMA on charity accounting.
Ken Almand has joined Moore Stephens as a transfer pricing partner in its London office. Almand joins from RSM, where he was head of transfer pricing for six years. He specialises in helping international corporations manage their global tax obligations, transfer pricing strategies and compliance responsibilities. Throughout his career, Almand has been involved in advising the UK Government on transfer pricing policy issues and has formulated UK transfer pricing legislation and anti-avoidance laws.
Smith Cooper has appointed Alex Thompson as a senior executive and James Ward as a senior manager in the firm’s corporate finance team. Both will primarily be based at the Nottingham office, but will operate across the wider Midlands, and assist clients throughout the UK. In their roles they will be acting for business owners and management teams to support and deliver all types of corporate transactions including acquisitions, disposals, management buy-outs/buy-ins and fundraising.
Quantama, a corporate recovery and business advisory firm, has appointed Maxine Reid as a partner in its Brighton office. Her remit will be to continue the growth of the practice in the south east and along the south coast from her base in Sussex. She joins the firm from Kreston Reeves where she launched and headed up the Eastbourne restructuring and recovery office.
Offshore law firm Mourant Ozannes has announced the appointment of three new partners to its global partnership, bringing the firm's total number of partners to 60. Stephen Alexander and Carla Benest, from the Jersey office, and Chinyin Johnston from the London office will join the partnership with effect from 1 February 2018. Alexander joined Mourant Ozannes in 2014 and has broad experience in multi-jurisdictional commercial litigation, arbitration and regulatory matters and regularly advises in relation to a wide range of commercial disputes, trust issues, investment fund matters, and insolvencies and restructurings. He qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales in 2004, a Cayman Islands Attorney-At-Law in 2008 and a Jersey advocate in 2016. Benest joined the firm in 2007 and is an experienced employment lawyer in both contentious and non-contentious employment matters including tribunal and Royal Court proceedings, discrimination issues, executive appointments and terminations and employment aspects of business reorganisations and corporate transactions. Johnston joined in 2015 and is a specialist corporate finance lawyer, with extensive experience advising on BVI and Cayman Islands law aspects of banking and finance transactions. She regularly advises banks, borrowers and arrangers on a broad range of matters, including acquisition and leveraged finance, fund finance, asset finance, debt restructuring, derivatives and structured products, insolvency and security enforcement, project finance and real estate finance.
Lori Sowerby has joined Stockton-based Baines Jewitt’s client payroll department. Sowerby has previously held similar roles in both the private and public secotr and is CIPP and AAT qualified. In her role she provides a range of support to Tees Valley organisations, including sole traders, start-ups, family firms, charities, SMEs and large businesses. As well as processing wages she is also responsible for overtime, bonus and pension payments.
Kevin Reed, former editor of Accountancy Age, has joined Foulger Underwood as ‘Consultant for Content and Engagement’. Reed’s role is to produce content aimed at further engaging with practitioners who are looking for support to improve their firm’s operations, profitability and implement plans for the future.
Cult Wines Limited, the fine wine asset manager has appointed Gemma Gowers as finance director. Gowers joins from Light Cinema Holding Limited, a private equity backed independent cinema chain where she was CFO and company secretary. Prior to that she held the same position at Yotel Limited, the global hotel group established by Simon Woodroffe, the founder of Yo Sushi.
