The coalition government's first few months of power were characterised by the radical cull of the quangos, the sometimes controversial 'quasi-autonomous non-governmental bodies', to great fanfare. But among the 100 or so abolished, one stood out – the Audit Commission – the body responsible for auditing 11,000 local government and health bodies since 1983.
