Revenue & Customs is correcting an error on its income tax rates and taxable bands - issued on the back of the pre-Budget report - which has caused computations nightmares for accountants.
Alerted to the error by an eagle-eyed reader, Accountancy contacted the Revenue, which said: 'We are sorry that there has been a slight error in the income tax table, which is now being corrected.
'With regard to the amount of the 10% starting rate for 2007-08. This is the "10p rate" which was abolished from 2008-09. The amount for 2007-08 should be £2,230. When updating the page for PBR we inadvertently transposed two digits.'
Bob Gale, of RJ Gale & Co based in Hassingham, Norfolk, said he only discovered the error when trying to reconcile a client's figure for SA302. Because of the 31 October deadline, 95% of his clients' paper returns had therefore been submitted containing errors.
He said that when speaking to the Revenue office, it became apparent that the staff did not have access to their own website to check the tables.
A frustrated Gale told Accountancy: 'Stated at £2,320 on the website, it was only £90 out, but the error was completely messing up everyone's computations.'
The Revenue thanked Accountancy for bringing the discrepancy to its attention. The tables concerned are at www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm.
