HMRC is reporting a further glitch in its new Real Time Information (RTI) system which is affecting student loan borrowers.
In a briefing note, HMRC says 'a very small number' of borrowers' employments have been incorrectly 'ceased' on HMRC's PAYE systems, with the result that these automatically inform the Student Loans Company (SLC) that those individuals had left their employment.
As a result, SLC have been issuing letters to these borrowers, querying their employment status. HMRC says it is now in the process of correcting fault in the RTI system and a fix should be complete 'within the next few weeks'. It also says there is an issue getting this corrected information on to the student loans system, and HMRC is taking active steps to rectify this.
In the meantime, employees affected by the problem should respond to the SLC saying they have not ceased or changed employer.
