Salaries frozen but benefits improve, says ICAS

Salaries for chartered accountants are stagnating, but many organisations are extending the range of benefits they offer, according to a survey of its members by ICAS.

The CA Salary Survey 2012/13 shows a third (34%) of accountants reporting a freeze on basic pay in their organisation, up from 29% the previous year, while 38% reported reduced bonuses.

However, 20% say the range of benefits on offer has been extended, twice as many as report a reduction (10%), with a money purchase pension and private healthcare/private health insurance the most significant options available.

The survey found that the median salary for a manager (qualified CA) in an accountancy firm ranged from just over £40,000 to £60,000, while as manager in industry a CA could command between £31,000 and £40,000 in a small business up to £61,000 to £70,000 in a publicly listed company.

The median salary for a financial controller ranged from £41,000 to £50,000 in a small business up to £81,000 to £90,000 in a publicly listed company. Meanwhile, for a financial director the median salary was £81,000 to £90,000 in a small business up to £201,000 to £299,000 in a plc.

The salary survey highlighted differences in the way men and women view equality, with 70% of male respondents believing 'opportunities are equal' for men and women within accountancy, compared to only 38% of female CAs.

The research also found that nearly half those polled are 'actively seeking a new job' or would pursue one 'if the right opportunity came up'
