Shopkeepers lose £243k tax appeal

Court upholds VAT assessments, penalties, and income tax amendments totalling £234,516.22 ruling that the shopkeepers had deliberately filed incorrect returns to reduce their tax liability

The First Tier Tribunal has ruled against the appeal of Best On Convenience Store against tax assessments and penalties issued by HMRC totalling £234,516.22 after the court ruled that they acted ‘deliberately and dishonestly’ by knowingly filing incorrect VAT and income returns.

Tasleem Balesaria and Salim Balesaria were married and ran the Best On Convenience Store in Blackpool. In November 2012, HMRC opened an enquiry under the Taxes Management Act 1970 (TMA).
