Tax firm fined £150k in tax avoidance case

The Upper Tribunal has fined AML Tax £150,000 for failing to comply with formal information notices issued as part of HMRC’s investigation into the firm’s £3.3m tax avoidance case

The Upper Tribunal (UT) ruled that AML Tax (AML), which is part of Doug Barrowman’s Isle of Man-based Knox Group, must now hand over the required records to enable HMRC to calculate the firm’s corporation tax bill for the years 2014-15 which is currently estimated at £3.3m.

The fine is in addition to penalties already issued by HMRC, totalling around £9,000.

The company, which is run by Arthur Lancaster who is a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser specialising in trusts and private client matters, has been linked to promoting tax avoidance schemes used by UK contractors and sub-contractors.
