£30m package offsets church VAT bill
The government has announced £30m of funding a year for
the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme (LPWGS) following the introduction
of the change to the VAT rate applied to alterations to listed buildings.
This follows weeks of protest from church leaders, MPs and community
groups critical of plans to impose VAT at 20% on alterations approved
for listed buildings from 1 October 2012.
