Treasury rejects MP call for review of tax reliefs

The Treasury has ruled out a review of the cost effectiveness of tax reliefs, saying it would not be best use of resources and would create business uncertainty

This follows calls from the Treasury Committee for HMRC to properly review whether tax reliefs work, and their cost benefit. At the moment only a third of reliefs have been officially costed by HMRC. In addition, there are concerns that there are high levels of abuse of some of the reliefs, with half of claims for research and development (R&D) tax relief identified as potentially abusive.
