The Treasury is looking for a replacement for John Whiting as permanent tax director to lead the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS), following the announcement that Whiting will be stepping down from the role and retiring in November

The tax director leads the work of the OTS and provides intellectual leadership and guidance. Whiting has held the role since the OTS was established in 2010.

Prior to that he was CIOT’s tax policy director having been a tax partner at PwC. He is also a non-executive director of HMRC and a board member of Revenue Scotland.

The role is advertised as part-time, typically three days a week on average, but the job-holder is required to be flexible over how this is delivered.

The Treasury says applicants must be leaders with broad understanding of business and personal tax, an appreciation of the operational implications of tax policy change and an understanding of the trade-offs involved in tax policy making.

The OTS is being put on a statutory footing in the Finance Bill 2016. Its aim is to provide independent advice to the Chancellor on simplifying the UK tax system, with the objective of reducing compliance burdens on both businesses and individual taxpayers. The deadline for applications is 14 July 2016.

Detailed specifications for the role and details of how to apply are here.
