The UK has submitted an application to the European Commission (EC) to extend the rural fuel rebate scheme to three towns in England and seven in Scotland.

It follows the government's plans to extend the 5p per litre discount on pump prices, currently enjoyed by remote island communities, to remote inland areas.

Hawes, Kirkby-in-Furness and Lynton in England, and Appin, Carrbridge and Gairloch in Scotland are among the 10 towns put forth in the application based on the strict eligibility criteria set by the EC. These include pump price threshold, cost of transporting fuel and population density.

A final decision on the areas in the scheme and the price discount is expected from the EC next year. The number of people benefitting from the rural fuel scheme will go up to nearly 120,000 if the extension is approved.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: 'As a Highlander, I know all too well that fuel prices tend to be highest in areas where a car is needed the most.

'We have put together the strongest possible evidence base to try and maximise the places that get it. As I've said before, it won't be easy to get this agreed with the Commission, but I will do everything I can to make this happen.'
