Underwood: should accountants mix compliance with advisory services?

As younger accountancy practitioners start up new practices and turn to technology and automation to provide compliance services for SME clients, does it make sense to offer additional advisory services or is that a sure way to damage profitability? It has been very interesting over the last month to talk to a number of practices that are at the forefront of developing new services for their clients using digitalisation, a range of apps and a single platform service.

Reflecting on the availability of these new applications, which can be applied to servicing clients and customised in respect of larger clients, new business models are emerging that will certainly have an impact on the shape of the profession in the future.

The use of applications and single platforms is polarising the marketplace. Younger practitioners starting up new businesses using a range of tools and analytical skills are at last becoming a realistic business model.
