Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is warning about a tax scam which targets drivers using a fake email, supposedly sent by DVLA, including a reference to report phishing as part of the hoax
The fake email includes the same branding used in official DVLA emails and says: ’We would like to notify you that you have an outstanding tax refund of £239.35 from an overpayment, request or refund. Please click here to access the secure web form.
‘Completed return amounts take 4 to 6 day to appear on your account. From Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency.’
The scam attempts to inform motorists that they have been overpaying their tax and are liable for a refund. The hoaxers have endeavoured to make the email seem legitimate by including an anti-scam message at the bottom of the email, urging the recipient to forward scam emails to the phishing department at DVLA.
DVLA has informed drivers that it does not send emails or text messages asking individuals to confirm personal details or payment information.
The agency said: ‘We’re aware that some members of the public are receiving emails, texts and telephone calls claiming to be from DVLA. Links to a website mocked up to look like a DVLA online service are sometimes included in the message.
‘We don’t send emails or text messages with links to websites asking you to confirm your personal details or payment information. We strongly advise anyone who receives such a request not to open the link and delete the item.’
