Pub group JD Wetherspoon has criticised the government for striking 'unsustainable' levels of tax on pubs, which is contributing to a high number of them being closed down, The Times reported. The chairman of the pubs group, Tim Martin, revealed that each Wetherspoon produces an average of £530,000 in taxes but only £50,000 is kept in after-tax profits. Martin said: 'The Government seems not to understand the economic impact of new taxes and legislation and continues to impose new burdens at a huge rate.' Despite Martin's hit at the Government, JD Wetherspoon has reported a 2% rise in profits from £30.2m to £30.8m.
