What advice would retired accountants give their younger selves?

Retired accountants share their views on the realities of their career experiences, what they would have done differently and their top tips on how to thrive in today’s profession in a survey for the Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA). Jonathan Barber, executive director of the IFA, assesses the findings

In a bid to gauge the views of retired members about their accountancy careers, the IFA conducted a wide-ranging survey of retirees from a range of age groups from midlife upwards, with around 11% between 55-64, 46% falling in the 65-74 years age bracket, and 33% indicating they were aged 75 or older. Most members had had been an accountant for more than 26 years before they retired – 88% in fact.

Satisfaction with career

Survey respondents were asked if they were happy with their chosen career path. Their responses are good advice for anyone in any career and good examples for those entering the accountancy profession.
