What are the rules on monitoring remote workers?

With the ubiquity of remote working, employee monitoring is becoming more important, but there are limits, says Stacie Cheadle, Croner-i technical writer

Remote working away from the employer’s premises, often at home, is now relatively common in the UK. It has numerous benefits including giving employees the flexibility to work around their personal commitments and access to work for employers located geographically far away.

However, remote working does lead to questions over how these employees can be effectively monitored.

When it comes to employee monitoring, there are several issues at play, one of the most significant being data protection. In the UK, data protection is governed by the Data Protection Act 1998 and the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
