More than 12m people have to file a tax return for the 2021-22 tax year and pay any taxed owed by 31 January deadline.

Taxpayers have until midnight to submit their self assessment returns before they face a £100 fixed penalty, with 9.3m having already filed their tax return.

Last year, more than 10.2m million taxpayers filed their tax returns by the deadline, leaving 3.4m facing penalties, which raised £340m.

Those who have self employed earnings or have received untaxed income over £1,000 will need to file a tax return. This includes income from renting out a property, including through Airbnb, and savings, investments, dividends and foreign income.

Myrtle Lloyd, director general for customer services, said: ‘Time is running out for millions of people who still need to file their self-assessment and pay any tax owed.’
