Out of the 650 MPs elected on 8 June as part of the general election, 20 of the successful candidates (3%) have an accounting background, with 51 accountants running in the election overall
The majority (80%) of the successful candidates belong to the Conservative party with 10% belonging to Labour and 10% running for the SNP.
Of the 20 accountant MPs, half are women with a record number of female MPs winning seats in the general election as a whole.
Justine Greening, who has previously worked for PwC and Karen Bradley, who has worked for KPMG and Deloitte, have both kept their Cabinet positions following the general election. Greening remains as secretary of state for education, and minister for women and equalities and Bradley keeps her role as secretary of state for culture, media and sport.
Despite ICAEW member, Craig MacKinley, being charged for alleged overspending in his 2015 election campaign he managed to keep his seat in his constituency of South Thanet.
