Aberystwyth Pier goes into administration after 150 years

John Kelly, partner, and Mark Malone, director, of the Birmingham office of Begbies Traynor have been appointed joint administrators of Don Leisure Ltd and Don Leisure Holdings Ltd, the two companies that  own and operate the Royal Pier, Aberystwyth

The directors of the companies have sought the protection afforded by the appointments from HMRC, which had threatened winding up proceedings for tax that had fallen into arrears.

The 150-year old Royal Pier, the first to open in Wales, suffered during the early part of 2014 from the storms that affected many businesses in the area, and has also been affected by poor trading during bad weather at the beginning of this year.

The business employs more than 100 full- and part-time employees. The joint administrators are considering a number of options for the pier but are intending to keep the business trading as normally as possible. In view of the historical interest in the pier, Begbies Traynor says there have been offers of support from local contacts.
