Accommodating pregnant employees’ needs

Our Croner-i HR expert explains the protection rules against dismissal for pregnant employees and how this applies practically in the workplace

The law provides protection for pregnant employees from suffering a detriment and/or dismissal because of pregnancy or maternity. Yet, every year this continues to happen.

Research by the campaign group Pregnant Then Screwed and Women in Data revealed that there was a 37% increase between 2016 and 2025 in women losing their jobs for getting pregnant or taking maternity leave.

In this practical scenario, we look at a company which operates several garden centres. Their staff are required to carry out various duties throughout the centre and staff need to be skilled in all aspects of the work to minimise the impact of staff shortages.
