Government accounting officers fail to question value for money

Efforts to raise the level of accountability for government spending are being undermined through the poor performance of departmental accounting officers (AOs) who frequently fail to challenge projects which deliver poor value for money. This comes against a backdrop of increasingly complex methods of service delivery and an environment where cost and performance data is often overlooked by AOs, claims the latest Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report.
