A stand-off between US and international standard setters means convergence plans are in doubt, says Peter Walton

Accounting for financial instruments has always been both complex and controversial. IAS 39, Financial Instruments: Recognition and Measurement, the financial instruments standard during the last decade, was more than 10 years in the making. Sir David Tweedie used to joke: ‘If anyone says they understand IAS 39, they haven’t read it properly.’
