To boldly go

Dropping the 50% tax rate and increasing thresholds for average earners would stimulate growth, argues Richard Godmon

Economic indicators confirm that the low rate of economic growth in the UK continues. The deficit remains a huge blot on the landscape and corporate profits and incomes are being squeezed. Until the economy grows significantly, it will be difficult to create the wealth that allows tax revenues to rise and helps reduce debt.

Cuts in state spending can only partly deal with the deficit, and increasing the scope of taxes and raising rates is likely to make matters worse by putting a brake on growth.
