In a Treasury Committee meeting, the Chancellor defended his Spring Statement stating that he was ‘very confident’ that his tax policies were ‘progressive’ after many have accused Sunak of not doing enough to help the poorest in the UK with the cost of living crisis, arguing that it was ‘irresponsible’ to increase public spending.

In a fractious exchange with MPs on the Treasury committee, the Chancellor stated that he had been forced to make choices over where to prioritise support because of rising government borrowing costs.
