Another interesting issue where there is considerable variation in accounting across GAAPs is the treatment of investment properties. While groups that focus entirely on real estate are likely to have examined their options in great detail already, there are also a significant number of companies and groups that hold just one or two properties that happen to be classified as investment properties, even though this is not central to the entity’s core business.
