HMRC’s updated list of major tax defaulters is topped by a metal dealer who owes £4.3m on £6.5m unpaid tax, followed by a haulier owing £593k, with online retailers and restaurants also featuring
HMRC has published its latest quarterly listing of deliberate tax defaulters’ details, adding 133 names to the list of those who have received penalties either for deliberate errors in tax returns or for failing to comply with tax obligations. The 133 penalties amount to £13.4m on a total of £21.3m tax owed.
The list includes tax evaders whose penalties involve unpaid tax of more than £25,000.
The largest tax penalty on the current listing amounts to £4.3m on £6.5m of tax owed over the period of June to September 2015 by Business Networks Management a computer equipment provider. The second biggest penalty was paid by a haulier who paid £593,000 on £989,000 of tax owed in November 2015.
The list also includes an online trader, Lulu Xu, who has a £485,000 fine on £693,000 of tax owed from December 2012 to October 2016 and a restaurant who owes £412,000 on £589,000 of unpaid tax.
HMRC only publishes details where the taxpayer has not made a full and immediate disclosure either before or during an investigation, and the information is made publicly available for a maximum period of 12 months.
