Danny Alexander, the Liberal Democrat politician who was chief secretary to the Treasury during the coalition government, is another casualty of the SNP surge across Scotland in the general election, which saw him lose his seat
Alexander was standing in the constituency of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey, which he had represented for the last ten years. However, he was well beaten on the night by the SNP candidate, Drew Hendry, who polled 28,838, or 50% of the vote.
Alexander’s share was down at 31%, with 18,029 votes cast in his favour.
Asked by the media about speculation he may enter the House of Lords, Alexander said: ‘I’m going to go and have a good night’s sleep, I don’t have any plans beyond that.
‘I’ve lost an election which I’m deeply disappointed by, but there are many many worse things that could happen to people and I’m sure that I’ll find something useful to occupy my time in the weeks to come.’
The Liberal Democrats, along with Labour and the Conservatives, all now hold just one seat each in Scotland, with the SNP victorious in 56 Scottish constituencies.
