Miliband over Reeves for chancellor, say Labour members

As nominations for Labour leadership election open, party members would rather Ed Miliband than Rachel Reeves was chancellor

Over the last few weeks, speculation has been rife about when Andy Burnham will take over as prime minister after Keir Starmer’s resignation.

Given that nominations for Labour leadership officially open today (9 July), and the former mayor of Manchester, and recently elected MP, Andy Burnham is the overwhelming favourite, party members were asked who should be chancellor in a Burnham government.

A poll of around 800 members of the Labour party by YouGov found that Ed Miliband, current minister for net zero, was the favourite to become chancellor, followed closely by the prospect of Rachel Reeves keeping her job.
