As online platforms drop large amounts of transaction data at the door of HMRC, Andrew Parkes, national tax director at Andersen LLP, explains who’s likely to be targeted in follow-up compliance work

Much has been said recently about the internet platforms sending information to HMRC, and thanks to misinformation spread online, many are worried that debt collectors are going to be crashing through their doors looking for 20p in tax on the sale of that questionable outfit bought for cousin Bert’s wedding 10 years ago. That is simply not going to happen.

While it is true that the internet platforms will be sending information on their more prolific members to the local tax authorities (it is worth remembering that this is an international project) the underlying rules have not changed.
