Economic trends: don’t rule out more surprises in 2017

After an unpredictable and turbulent year, PwC senior economic adviser Andrew Sentance predicts a year of further political disruption in the US and Europe

Last year will be remembered as a year of shocks and surprises, driven by major political events. The Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump as the 45th US president would have been seen as highly unlikely events at the beginning of the year. Not as unlikely as Leicester City FC winning the Premier League, perhaps, but Brexit and a Trump presidency were not the central business planning assumptions in the first half of 2016.
