Gearing up for a green economy could do as much for the global markets as Roosevelt’s public works programme did for the US, says Mark Malloch-Brown

As leaders struggled to keep their countries afloat amid the stormy seas of the euro crisis, many of them had to head off to sunnier climes, first Mexico and then Brazil. They were not sneaking off for a quiet summer break but rather for a summer of summits. The G20 meeting in late June was followed by the Rio+20 global environmental gathering.
