Economic Trends – Who’s Banking With Whom?

Taxpayers might be pumping billions into the banks, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be switching from lenders to borrowers anytime soon, warns Danny Gabay.

As an impoverished student I once received a letter from my bank manager (remember them?) asking me if I had not perhaps got our relationship confused. You, he said, are supposed to be banking with us. It took me a while to work out what he meant, but eventually the penny dropped and so did my overdraft. But today, I could send the same letter back if I could remember his name: you are supposed to lend me money.
