Essay writing service loses £420k VAT case

An internet based essay and dissertation writing service for students has lost an appeal at the First Tier Tribunal over who is liable for £419,559 in VAT charges for the academic work

All Answers Limited appealed to the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) against VAT assessments issued by HMRC for the period 12/16 for £31,422, for the periods 12/17 to 06/19 for £286,541 and 09/19 to 03/20 for £101,596.

This is the third time the case has appeared before a tax tribunal with the ongoing dispute running since 2020.

The appellant, All Answers, argued that it was not liable for the full VAT obligation as the writers of the academic essays, who were subcontracted, should bear some of the liability.
