European football profits climb 16%

The top five European football leagues raked in £15.36bn in the 2022/23 season, aided by the 2022 World Cup and the lifting of Covid restrictions

Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance found the European football market grew its revenue by 16% to €35.3bn (£27.8bn) with the five biggest leagues increasing their value by 14%, reporting a profit of €500m (£394m) for the first time since 2018/19.

In terms of the Premier League, the division surpassed a value of £6bn for the first time, increasing by 11% from £5.5bn. The average revenue per club was a huge £300m, with a 14% rise in match-day revenue to £867m due to a new record amount of attendance throughout the season.

There was also a £221m increase in commercial revenue and a 9% boost in broadcast revenue, rising to £3.2bn.

Additionally, the women’s Super League increased its revenue to £48m, with 50% growth across the teams in the league which can be attributed to the success the England women's team had in the Euros.
