Farming: herd basis of taxation - part 2

In part two of our exclusive series on farming taxation and accounting, Michael Parker CTA, head of tax at the National Farmers Union (NFU), considers the pros and cons of making a herd election

Income tax rules allow mature farm animals kept for production to be treated in one of two ways, either as stock in trade with the values of the animals at the beginning and end of the accounting year being taken into account in arriving at profit, or on the herd basis, where the animals are effectively treated as fixed capital.
