Peter Murrell, 61, was chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP) from 2001 to 2023, and was married to former first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon between 2010 and 2025.

On Monday, 25 May, at the High Court in Edinburgh, Murrell was convicted of embezzling £400,310 funds from the SNP, the governing party in Scotland at the time, after he plead guilty to the embezzlement which took place between August 2010 and January 2023.

He stole the money to fund a luxury lifestyle, buying high end cars, a campervan, designer watches, jewellery and even a £3,000 coffee machine, manipulating the finances of the political party to cover his tracks and steal hundreds of thousands of pounds in membership dues from SNP members over a 13-year period.
